Boy Scouts Dog Care Merit Badge Camp at Coastal Pet Rescue

Come spend the week at Camp Pawsawhile and learn from our seasoned volunteers and staff all about dog care to help you earn your Dog Care merit badge. Scouts will work hand in hand with our AM dog care teams and be able to ask questions and learn how we care for animals in a shelter environment.

2018 Program Dates: July 9 through 13 (except Wednesday due to surgeries)
Program time: 9 am to 2 pm
Cost: $25 donation per Scout to cover materials
Participation Limit: 10 Scouts

Scouts will receive a certificate at the completion of the program and will take their workbooks home with them. CPR does not provide official Scouting badges or awards - all work should be turned in to your Scout leader to be awarded.

The program is directed by CPR director and founder Lisa Scarbrough who is also a registered BSA leader for Pack 295.

Attire: Scouts should wear closed toe shoes, clothes that may get dirty

Food and Beverage: Scouts should bring a sack lunch and refillable water bottle. A refrigerator and microwave is available on site.

Waivers and Code of Conduct
Each Scout participating in the Dog Care merit badge program with Coastal Pet Rescue must have a parent sign a Youth Release Waiver and parent and Scout sign the Youth Code of Conduct form before participating. All Scouts are expected to adhere to the Scout Law during all activities. Scouts failing to abide by the Code of Conduct will be asked to leave.

Scouts will be handling animals during their time in the program. Only Scouts with a strong ability to follow directions should consider participating.

Electronics
No electronics should be brought outside of cellular phones. Phones will be stored in a locker during the program and Scouts may have access to them if needed for contacting parents. The exception will be for laptops or tablets and digital cameras being used by Scouts also completing work for the Photography merit badge.

Pre-requisite: Requirement 4
For two months, keep and care for your dog. (If you do not have a dog at home, Scouts may complete 60 shifts with Coastal Pet Rescue for us to sign off on this requirement.) Maintain a log of your activities during this period that includes these items:

  • Feeding schedule
  • Types of food used
  • Amount fed
  • Exercise periods
  • Training schedules
  • Weekly body weight record
  • Grooming and bathing schedules
  • Veterinary care (if necessary)
  • Costs
Also include a brief description of the type of housing/shelter arrangements you have for your dog.

A note for those with cat allergies
Camp Pawsawhile has two resident cats that live on the property. We cannot guarantee that your child will not come into contact with them during their time in the camp program. If your child is severely allergic to cats, we request that they not enroll in this program.

Additional Merit Badge Opportunities
While participating in the program, Scouts may opt to also work on merit badges for Photography, Public Speaking, and Pets. Scouts who have already completed the Dog Care Merit Badge are invited to work on the additional three merit badges with some requirements being presented to current program participants. The additional badges program will run from 2 to 3 pm each day with some items needing to be completed at home. Please note that your care logs for the Pets merit badge may not be done at the same time as the Dog Care merit badge.

Community Service Hours
Scouts will receive one hour of community service for each day of attendance. Scouts may opt to return for an additional shift at 5 pm or stay on for an extra hour or two to earn additional service hours.
