Coastal Pet Rescue Mission Statement
Coastal Pet Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue organization dedicated to saving the lives of homeless, abused and neglected dogs and cats in Savannah and surrounding areas. Founded in February 2003, Coastal Pet Rescue changes the lives of homeless pets in Chatham, Bryan and Effingham Counties through its foster home program and small capacity shelter, Camp Pawsawhile Retreat.
Coastal Pet Rescue provides:
- Rescue, foster care, veterinary care, and sterilization for animals in county animal shelters that would otherwise be euthanized.
- Foster care for animals surrendered by their owners who either can no longer provide for the pets or no longer wish to have them in their homes.
- Adoption of rescued pets to qualified homes that have been properly screened and counseled by our adoption coordinators and foster parents to maintain the pet in the home for a lifetime.
- Training of leadership team members and volunteers in the areas of humane education, animal welfare, animal behavior and care, and disaster response.
- Education to the public in the form of adoption counseling, pet behavior consultation and training, hurricane evacuation planning, media interviews, and classroom presentations.
Coastal Pet Rescue Organization Vision
Coastal Pet Rescue is recognized as a resource for the welfare of homeless, abandoned and abused companion animals in Savannah and surrounding areas. Our goal is to lower euthanasia rates at our county animal controls by:
- Bringing adoptable pets into our program for medical and social rehabilitation and re-homing.
- Providing resources to pet owners to encourage their responsibility and commitment to their pets and prevent them from contributing to the homeless pet population (i.e. spay/neuter awareness, microchipping, etc.).
We want to be a valuable resource to our community. We believe that one person can make the difference in the life of an animal in need, so as an organization, we have more strength to help more animals.
Coastal Pet Rescue pets are in foster homes or our small capacity shelter, Camp Pawsawhile Retreat. Appointments to see pets may be made once an adoption application has been completed and reviewed.

We wanted to share a quick update for Zep's fan club:She remains hospitalized Animal Hospital at Rice Hope Hope through the weekend. They are giving her amazing care and keeping her comfortable while allowing her body to adjust to increasing nutrition. We are sincerely appreciative of all the support for her. She has one of our most experienced fosters waiting to take her as soon as she can be released. We know this is an emotional case, as it has been for us. Please try to be respectful in the comments. We are aware of various actions some of you want, not all messages to us have been nice, some even claiming we are not doing enough. Our foremost concern is Zep. Please trust our over two decades of doing rescue that we know the steps to take and who to get involved. Thank you.
You want to know why rescues ask so many questions at adoption? This is why. Zep was adopted from us in May 2024. On the left is her out on a field trip with a volunteer before adoption, on the right was how she was returned to us last night because they were moving. Despite the neglect, she was all tail wags for attention. We want to trust people, we really do, but we get to see so many heartbreaking things happen to our rescued pets even when we do everything we can to change their lives. Zep is at the vet now. Please consider a $5 donation towards her care and diet to get her back to her fabulous self. Donations can also be made through our website coastalpetrescue.org/donate for credit cards, zelle, Venmo, apple pay, and Google wallet For those who have inquired, we are not a law enforcement agency, so we cannot bring any charges ourselves. Update 6 pm: There are obviously a number of concerns. Immediately, her bloodwork was unremarkable, which is good. There is concern about her vision and possible neurology issues. For now, she will be hospitalized at Animal Hospital at Rice Hope for a few days with IV fluids and care.
