Coastal Pet Rescue Successful Adoption Story: Buddy

Adopted: August 3, 2005
Rescued: June 15, 2005

Buddy was surrendered to the Humane Society. Being heartworm positive, he was slated to be euthanized. A volunteer contacted one of Coastal Pet Rescue's volunteers to see if we could help. We took Buddy in, got his heartworms treated, got him neutered, and found a great home for him in South Carolina.

Update August 10 2005
Buddy

I just wanted to let you all know that Buddy was doing great he has got to be one of the best dogs ever. He has adapted very well and has a great attitude toward all people. My girlfriend is in love with him and if you knew my girlfriend that would should surprise you. He did take a little while to get his stomach in line but he is doing great with that. I took him to the vet and they were all very surprised with him to see how well behaved he was. When they were trimming his nails all he did was sit there with his paw out. You were right about him loving to ride in the car also. Soon as he gets in all he does is lie down and go to sleep. Update August 15, 2005 Took him to the lake this weekend he is a little timid of the water. He is a great swimmer though. I would carry him out and hold him and let him paddle (had great form). You can tell that he is very much the pre-madonna though because he did not like the way the bottom felt so all he would put only down his 2 front paws so his back end was just floating it was really funny. He got a little more comfortable when the neighbor's brought there weim over he is a good bit bigger but Buddy held his own. The ran and played in the yard for a good part of the morning. We took him for a ride in the boat, it took him a while to get used to that but once he figured out what was going on he calmed down and enjoyed it. Thanks for the information and once I get my camera working better I will send you some more pictures. I am afraid my girlfriend is going to try and steal him from me if I am not careful she is getting really attached. My mom has been coming by and picking him up during the day alot and letting him ride around with her and my maids have been letting him out and taking him to walk while they are washing my clothes. He does have a very picky stomach though I mixed soft puppy chow with hard and it messed him up for a couple of hours. He also loves pig ears he gets one of those a day I am hoping that will put the extra 5 lbs that I would like to see on him pretty quickly. I took him over to some friends house on Friday night and he played with there 2 year old 120 lbs lab and they got along great. He does not get along that well with older dogs just because he wants to play so much it really gets on there nerves. Hope all is going well and I will send more pictures when I get some. -- David Update November 15, 2005 I thought that you all might like to see how Buddy is doing. He looks great and has been wonderful he has a great personality and behaves wonderfully. He is a true heart breaker. My mother has gotten so attached that she goes and picks him up every day and he spends the day light hours with her at the house and running errands. This is coming from a woman who has never had a dog inside or in the car. He is a perfect gentleman and behaves well. He has been a great fit. I had to take one of his toenails off because it was splitting to the nail bed but other than that nothing has gone wrong. On his last trip to the doggy spa he had put on about 3 1/2 lbs so he has put on a little weight I think that might have to do with all the Frosty Paws that my girlfriend gives him. I am going to have to work on that. Hope all is well and thanks again.

Update- October 30, 2006 On August 3, 2005, my life was forever changed. It was on this day that my boyfriend, David, (now my husband) drove to Savannah, Georgia to pick up the newest member of our family, Buddy. From the records we received, we believed Buddy to be approximately one year old. Although it breaks my spirit to think of Buddy’s life prior to his rescue by Coastal Pet Rescue, I believe it happened for a reason because it caused our worlds to collide.

As a 31 year old accountant, I tend to be an attention to detail type person. This has always been especially evident in my personal life… organized food pantry, colored coded closets, etc. … you get the picture. Prior to Buddy, a speck of dirt on the floor would have sent me cleaning for hours. For these very reasons, truth is, I questioned David adopting Buddy until the very day he picked him up.

The difference a “Buddy” makes…

Though I do not believe that a person’s character can change, my focuses have been completely changed since that day in August. Buddy has truly changed my life. Buddy lives in our home. Needless to say, I have gotten past the “dirt on the floor” hang up. He is a typical two-year-old Weimeraner who loves Frosty Paws, chasing squirrels, and Clemson football (ok – maybe not the latter, but we are working on it)!! He can eat the “squeaker” out of a toy in less than five minutes – not a cheap quality, I might add – and has been known to snore – LOUDLY.

It is our understanding that Buddy’s previous owners left him in the house when they moved. We believe that it is as a result of this cruelty that Buddy does not like to be alone. It has only been in recent months that Buddy will roam to areas of our house without us. Though we think he has made great progress, we try to leave him alone as seldom as possible. When my husband and I are at work, Buddy stays with his “grandmother.” Buddy helps her plant flowers, sell hay, etc. From time to time (and when his “grandmother” will part with him for a day) he stays with his “uncle” at his golf course. Buddy loves to greet the customers in the clubhouse. I could go on for pages to make my point, but, as you can see, Buddy has touched MANY people’s lives in the year he has been with us. It is often hard to remember life before Buddy.

Thank you Coastal Pet Rescue for caring about animals like Buddy enough to ”rescue” them. How anyone could treat him (or any other animal) with such disregard, I will never be able understand.

Ironic how things work out, since it seems, in the end, Buddy’s previous owners are the “punished” ones. They will never be able to enjoy the happiness Buddy brings to everyone he meets. Thank Heavens!!
