Coastal Pet Rescue Successful Adoption Story: Mac (Luke)

Adopted: January 2, 2005
Rescued: September 8, 2004

Luke was a 8 year old cocker spaniel who wound up in Chatham County Animal Control. He had heartworms and needed surgery for cherry eye, as well as to be neutered.

Update February 11 2005
Hey Lisa, How are ya??? Luke, (Mac) is doing well. He gets along great with my other cocker, (Pete), they are best buddies! He has even learned to leave the cats alone. He only had to get one correction from them before he figured out that they were NOT little dogs to play with. He has finally figured out that he doesn't need to sleep on the floor in my bedroom. But the funny part is that the only way that he'll get into the bed is to start in the bathroom and then take a running leap. The first time he did it I was hysterical. I put him down on the floor just to see if he would do it again, and he did. Poor thing didn't know what I was laughing at! My bed is not high, I guess he just hasn't figured that out yet. He has adjusted well, as have I. I decided that I didn't like keeping him in the crate while I was at work, so for 2 days, I put him in the spare bedroom, where he couldn't chew anything. (He is especially fond of paper products!) That lasted until I looked at the back of the door, and found that he had found a weak spot in the hollow core door, and shredded it about 8 inches up from the floor. The whole bottom part is open, and I'm now able to see just how hollow core doors are made. I swear that he is part goat!!! Checked the feet to see if he had hooves, but didn't find them, so I guess he really is a cocker, with "different" habits. He is back in the crate, which he doesn't mind, as he goes right there in the morning when I tell him that it's time for me to leave. Don't worry about him, he's fine, doing well, and looks and acts happy. Spoiled rotten once I got over the door, that did take a day or two though! LOL -- Gwen 08/29/05 Hi Lisa, He's doing well! He adjusted faster to the cats than they did to him. Simon, my Siamese has finally decided that he is here to stay, so he now goes up to him for him to lick his head for him. It's really quite endearing. I never thought that I would see it. Simon thinks that I am "his" mom, and doesn't like anyone else around me, but has relented and lets Mac in the bed. I did tell you that I had to rename Luke? I have a friend that has a son named Luke, and did not think it was a good idea to have the dog named the same as her child. She was not impressed either. The boy was though. He was quite thrilled actually. Of course, he's only 4. He'll get over it though. lol I discovered that Mac is quite the escape artist, given the chance. I have what I call a Polish door. It looks like a French door, but opens on one side. (no offense meant if you are polish!). I came in from work one day, with my arms loaded with groceries, and Mac took the opportunity, and as I came in, he went out! Down the driveway, and down the dirt road. I live in a very remote area, at the beach, actually 4 houses back from the beach, which he has never been to. He stays in the fenced yard, since one of my neighbors is rather 'different'. Of course, he ran right to her house, and she was in her yard. And he sat right there talking to her! She is the one that I have had difficulties with before, such as her calling my boss to tell him that I had dead bodies in my yard. (Yes, she is a lovely neighbor!) Now that I know what to watch for in Mr. Houdini, he has not made the Great Escape since then. He and Pete are great friends, and get along well. He eats good, every thing that I give him. I have caught him in the trash a couple of times, and we have talked about it, but he told me that it was Pete that made him do it, or that Simon put him up to it. See how they are??? Pete will still on occasion forget himself and think that Mac is a girl and try to have a date. Mac will tolerate that for a short time, until his patience runs out, then he lets Pete know that he has had enough. Pete looks at him like he's broken his little heart but he gets over it. I'm going to eventually have to get him fixed. I would like to breed him first though. He would have pretty puppies, if I could find a female like him. He's a white with black spots cocker, with one brown eyebrow. Really pretty. Rotten too. They both are. Treats every night. I tell them it's time to go to bed and they both run me over to get to the bedroom! Mac is out of the crate now, since he gets along so well with everyone. The only continuing problem that he displays is that he does NOT like to go outside in the rain. He will go out, if you PULL him out. BUT, he will wait until he comes back inside to go to the bathroom. He may be the death of me yet. He keeps blaming Pete and Simon for that too. lol Other than his pathological lying, he is doing well. I don't have a camera that I can take 'puter pics with. I might be able to borrow one from work, but I'll have to ask. Sometimes they are picky, sometimes they are good about it. Mac STILL does the running leap from the bathroom to get into the bed. It's the funniest thing that I have ever seen in my life. What's even funnier is that my bathroom is behind my bedroom so he has to make the turn, so he loses the speed. I wish that you could see him do this. It really is hysterical. I'll have to borrow a video camera sometime to get it on film. No one could believe it. All in all, he's doing great!
