Raising Cane...

The phone rang...it was time to decide...I don't know what we'll do...Go ahead and pull him.... this began the day to save Cane from death at Animal Control, Savannah.

Tied up with wire to a tree, animal control found him. He was there for a few weeks and today, his time was up. Due to the teamwork of a few people and the support of Coastal Pet Rescue, Cane was released and so it began ... Raising Cane.

When he came to my house for his first bath, what I saw was a large, white hyper american bulldog and I thought, oh, what have I gotten myself into. (I had just recently fostered out another bully dog who was a bit of a handfull.) After a few weeks of beginning training and just teaching how to sit, I thought, this dog is stubborn and he isn't listening. How dare he...he at least could be polite after all we have done for him. It was only after an overnight visit to the vet for a surgery, we learned Cane was deaf, not stubborn.

My whole life revolves around communication...designing words....how am I supposed to communicate to this big, goofy dog. I went to the library and checked out "Living with a Deaf Dog" which provided some great insight into this gentle giant.

I can only imagine, or try not to imagine, how his first owners treated him, thinking he was stupid or stubborn. All the while, he just didn't know what anyone wanted him to do, they never showed him. Think how frightening that must be. The only experience I can compare to is being in Italy, not speaking Italian and just looking around with curiosity, fear and hoping the lady at the counter understands me when I point at a sandwich that I want.

In the 4 months I have had Cane, he has made me laugh everyday. Even when I didn't want to. Having just cleaned the room up, Cane comes bounding in the door way, just like Kramer from Seinfield, HELLOOOOO I AMMMMM HEREREEEEEE. He slides across the floor, into the food bowl and .... dog, food and bowl all go tumbling all over the floor. Deep breath. He looks up at me with this totally excited grin. Probably wondering when it is time to eat.

He has learned certain signs and sits every time like a true southern gentleman before dining. Each night I go out and read him a chapter in whatever book I am on. I know he doesn't understand it but I want him to be educated none the less.

He loves bugs.
Doesn't like coffee.
Love ear rubs.
Doesn't like being left for too long.
Loves car rides.

But most of all he just loves....

Raising Cane, I am learning, we all have our obstacles to overcome. All have things that scare us and if just the right people come along, they might help us through this. He trying to teach me to not be so serious and to laugh more. I am working on this.

Last night this is what he told me:
Cane would like a home of his own. His own parents to cuddle up with on the couch. He loves his foster home but he knows he is just waiting. He needs a fenced in yard, with a secure real wooden or Chain link fence. His parents will need to understand the commitment of taking care of him for the rest of his life. Keeping him safe. But most of all he wants some one to laugh with him and experience what joy it will be Raising Cane together.
