Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort

Savannah, GA
The Savannah community came together to send relief to animals in need in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Coastal Pet Rescue sent out a call for donations and supplies to be carried by Effingham Animal Hospital's Lisa Bailey and Dr. Patricia Rabiansky to areas hit by Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi. While the initial call went out to Coastal Pet Rescue's volunteers, it inadvertently appeared in the Sunday edition of the Savannah Morning News.
"I had no idea this happened," said Lisa Scarbrough, Coastal Pet Rescue's president and founder. "I came home from spending the day with my family and found 40 voicemails on our system."
The calls resulted in enough supplies to warrant three truck loads in two trips to Effingham Animal Hospital.
Crossroad Animal Hospital, Advertising Specialty Services, eMarketSouth's Team E and many area residents opened their hearts and their pocketbooks for the relief effort.
"I could not believe just how much my porch could hold," said Scarbrough.
"The response was overwhelming. All I could think is that it could have been us, and we'd want other people to care that much, too."
One truckload of supplies was delivered on September 3rd, prior to the initial departure of the Effingham Animal Hospital team to Diamondhead, MS. The second two truckloads were delivered on September 6th.
