Pet Fur Collection Drive for Gulf Coast Oil Booms

May 20 2010
Savannah, GA

It seemed like an odd request, but local pets just made a huge contribution to the Gulf Coast oil cleanup.

Yesterday, Coastal Pet Rescue finished shipping 127.8 pounds of pet fur they collected from area groomers and pet owners.

“I really had no idea just how supportive the community would be for such an unusual effort,” says Coastal Pet Rescue president Lisa Scarbrough.

Coastal Pet Rescue launched the pet fur collection effort just 14 days ago. All the collected fur was sent down to Pensacola, FL where volunteers from Matter of Trust will mix the fur with human hair and stuff it in nylons to create oil booms.

The collection could not have been as successful without the help of local businesses who donated fur from their grooming shops, provided boxes and shipping funds, or served as drop-off locations: Hoof and Woof, Animal Resort and Spa, Islands Pet Center, Diva Dogs, Paws Doggy Day Spa & Grooming by Sonia, Case Veterinary Hospital, Top Dog Spa, New Attitudes Hair Studio, Dr. Nancy M. Eschette, Catnip N Biscuits, Seaside Sisters, and Paula Deen Enterprises.
