Coastal Pet Rescue Reminds Families to Plan for Pets this Hurricane Season

(Savannah, GA) - July 06, 2008

With one storm out in the Atlantic, now is a good time to prepare your pets in the event of a hurricane evacuation.

Prepare a backpack or small duffle bag just for your pet. Contents should include:

* Copies of veterinary records
* Current medications
* Recent photo
* A few toys - avoid anything that squeaks or makes loud noises as evacuation travel can be lengthy.
* A favorite blanket or towel for resting.
* Heartworm and flea medicine
* A pet first-aid kit
* Litter pan and litter for cats
* Extra leash and harness, leader or muzzle for dogs
* Food and water dish
* Jug of water
* One week’s supply of food
* Paper towels, cleaner and trash bags for accidents along the way
* Attach a luggage tag with the pet’s name and your contact information

If pets have anxiety with traveling, consult with your veterinarian to determine safe solutions to make the travel more comfortable for them.

Your pet should also be outfitted with a collar that has the pet’s rabies and identification tag attached. Pet parents should also consider microchipping a pet to provide permanent identification in the event that a pet loses its collar during travel.

For safe transporting, your pet should ride in an enclosed crate or carrier or be secured in a safety restraint device.

In making plans for where your family will stay during an evacuation, don’t forget to look for pet-friendly lodging. Many hotels will accomodate pets during emergency travel, but call ahead to be sure. If you are staying with friends or family, bring a crate so your pet will have its own space and will not overimpose on your host’s hospitality.

Also, consider researching for local veterinarians in the area where you will be staying. It may be necessary for your pet to need care while you are out of town, so include this information on an index card before you leave.

Remember, when an evacuation order is issued, time is of the essence. Advance planning will help keep your family calm and reduce stress, especially for your four-legged members.
