Just say NO to holiday foods for your pets this Thanksgiving

(Savannah, GA) - November 20, 2006

The holiday dishes that you prepare may not be suitable for your four-legged family members.

“We typically want to include our pets in our holiday gatherings,” says Lisa Scarbrough, president and founder of Coastal Pet Rescue. “However, those little scraps could have fatal consequences.”

Foods that should be avoided include chocolate, onion, fatty foots, bread dough, gravy, garlic, tomatoes, raw potatoes, grapes, raisins, and alcohol. Also, beware of the bones you give your pets to chew; splinters can break off and become a choking hazard.

“If you want your pet to feel included, prepare them a special feast including canned pet food of their favorite flavor and their own pet treats.”

If you have a concern about something your pet may have ingested, you can call the Pet Poison Helpline at 800.213.6680. If your pet is showing signs of distress, call your veterinarian or the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Referral Center at 912.356.6113.
